GLOBAL INEQUALITY: THE CHALLENGE

The majority of people living in poverty are women. They have fewer resources, less power and less influence in decision-making compared to men.
Poverty: Almost 70% of the 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty are women and girls.
Welfare: Worldwide an estimated one in five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape during their lifetime

.
Democracy: Of the world’s 188 directly-elected leaders, just 16 are women.
Maternal mortality:  Globally, 500,000 women die in childbirth every year.

Health: Three quarters of 15-24 year-olds living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are female.

This year, with Oxfam’s support:

250,000 women improved their economic position (for example through businesses and markets).
80,000 women received support to boost their political participation.

750,000 women got better access to vital services such as health care and education.
2 million people received information and education on women’s rights.
1.7 million people paticipated in activities to reduce gender-based violence.
60,000 women have been supported in leadership positions in their communities and elsewhere.
