There is much evidence that the deep blue stone was already popular thousands of years ago among the people of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, Greece and Rome. It is said that the legendary city of Ur on the Euphrates profited from a keen lapis lazuli trade as long ago as the fourth millennium B.C., the material coming to the land of the two great rivers from the famous deposits in Afghanistan.
As they did more than 5000 years ago, the best raw stones still come from the wild and rugged mountains of the Hindu Kush in the north-east of Afghanistan. The lumps of blue rock, extracted from these inhospitable mountains can only be brought down into the valley in the summer months.
The worth of this stone to the world of art is immeasurable, for the ultramarine of the Old Masters is nothing other than genuine lapis lazuli. Many pictures of the Madonna for example, were created using this paint. But in those days, ultramarine blue was not only precious and so intense that its radiance outshone all other pigments, it was also very expensive and unlike all other blue paints, which tended to pale with exposure, it has lost none of its radiance to this very day.
In other cultures, lapis lazuli was regarded as a holy stone, particularly in the Middle East where it was thought to have magical powers and was used to symbolize the union of earth and the heavens and draw natural magical powers from the earth and the sky. It was sacred to Laz, an ancient Goddess of Love, as well as the Babylonian Goddess Ishtar and later the Egyptian Goddesses Nuit and Isis. A piece of Lapis Lazuli was used as a charm to call upon various Goddesses of love and sexuality if you needed their assistance, and the stone is still commonly used in modern day love potions.
